The way you pay can make a big impact on small businesses, especially farms who process a lot of small transactions. This isn't something that crosses most peoples' minds, especially if you're used to shopping at larger businesses and box stores that get preferred payment processing rates and have higher margins and revenue.
The cost of credit card payments
Did you know that for small transactions, the cost to the business for processing a credit card payment can reach well over 5% of the payment amount? That can make an appreciable business to small farm, whether they're just getting started or are well established. Imagine a 5% cut on your paycheck - that would be hard to swallow!
Most vendors won't mind you using credit cards for more substantial purchases, but if you feel like doing them a favour, you can still heed the advice below.
Hit the ATM
It doesn't cost customers anything to stop by their own bank's ATM and take our some cash before shopping, whether it's just enough for this week's market, or a small stash to make sure you have enough for a number of weekly purchases.
Most vendors are used to paying the fees, though, so don't be a hero and pay a service fee to use an ATM that isn't covered by your bank. Just try to prepare for next time.
Runner up: debit cards
Processing debit card payments typically cost significantly less than credit cards, so don't sweat it if you forgot your wad of cash. You might miss out on a few cents of cash back, but your farmer will thank you, and you'll be sure you don't overspend!
